Flags of Honour Foundation comes to the rescue of 90 year war widow forced to live with a monthly pension of Rs 80; offers allowance of Rs. 5000 per month
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Member of Parliament appeals to citizens angry and frustrated with Government’s apathy to join hands with Flags of Honour.
Meerut, 21st September 2010: The Flags of Honour Foundation (FOH) today stepped in to offer financial support to Shrimathi Pushpa Vanthi, a 90 year old war widow forced by the Government to survive on a pension of Rs.80 per a month. The Flags of Honour Foundation has decided to give the war widow an allowance of Rs. 5000 per month. On behalf of the Flags of Honour Foundation, Maj Gen AJB Jaini, AVSM met Shrimathi Pushpa Vanthi in Meerut today and handed over a cheque of Rs. 10,000.
The Flags of Honour Foundation has stepped in to fulfill responsibilities of that Government and the country are obligated and failed to miserably.
In a statement, Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Member of Parliament and Principal Donor of Flags of Honour Foundation said “It is extremely unfortunate that widows, war veterans and ex-servicemen are treated in such a undignified and disrespectful manner by the Government and the bureaucracy”. Further, Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar said “I appeal to all citizens who are frustrated and angered by Government’s apathy towards soldiers and their families to join hands with Flags of Honour (www.flagsofhonour.org) and show your gratitude to those lay down their lives for the nation”.
Background
Shrimathi Pushpa Vanthi,a widow of Dharam Chand, an infantry soldier with the Indian Army who was martyred after the 1965 India - Pakistan war. Despite being entitled to a much higher pension and her repeated letters and pleas, the Government failed to respond forcing Shrimathi Pushpa Vanthi to approach Supreme Court which showed its disgust over the treatment meted to the widow and issues notices to the Government last week.
