Subway project yet to take off

Coimbatore : The proposal for two mini sub ways connecting Oppanakara Street- Big Bazaar Street by Public works department to Corporation in 1992 is still gathering dust. The lack of sub ways makes the busiest shopping centre in Coimbatore often a crowded one.
“Two mini sub ways are very essential for busy street, but what we can do? We are waiting for the approval for the last 15 years and no improvement hitherto. If we get any order from City Corporation we will speed up our procedures,” said Ranjan.K.N, Assistant Engineer, Public Works Department.
Oppanakara Street is always jampacked with street vendors, pedestrains, two-wheeler parking and passing of vehicles. Though it’s the public who has to bear the brunt of it, the PWD is doing its best to rectify the situation. “To ease the walking of pedestrians we have arranged a separate way and two-wheeler parking has been shifted to the North end of the street,” said Ranjan.
“Street vendors are encroachers, but they should be rehabilitated in a proper way as they also want to live, he added.
About the space problem of the street, the response of the big and small shops here was a mixed one. “We have no problems in sales and we are maintaining our customer support. We are providing separate parking facility, which has the capacity to accommodate 200 cars at a time,” said Selvaraj. K, Assistant Manager of Chennai Silks.
But others had another opinion. “No one thinks about the canal here that was blocked 10 years before. It’s the main cause for flood. Accidents are often during rainy season,” said Abdul Majeed K.H, Proprietor, Good Luck travel Goods near Ashokan Bus stop.
Apart from Oppanakara Street, there were plans to build mini sub ways at Gandhipuram, Hopes College, Avinashi Road and Home Science College. If these sub ways come to Coimbatore the traffic problems can be solved easily.
